VICENTE FOX, FORMER PRESIDENT OF MEXICO Vicente Fox, the former President of Mexico, addressed the Darden School of Business and the greater Charlottesville community on April 28, 2009. Fox was the keynote speaker of the Latin American Student Association Conference, co-sponsored by the Darden Leadership Speaker Series. To Darden’s packed Abbott Center Auditorium, Fox described his evolution as a leader and his views on the most pressing global challenges. Fox was raised on a ranch in Guanajuato, Mexico, became President of Coca-Cola in Mexico and then launched his political career, rising from Governor of Guanajuato to President of Mexico, an office he held from 2000 to 2006. Since leaving office, President Fox and his wife, Marta Fox, who also attended the event, have launched the Fox Center in Guanajuato, Mexico, a research center, think-tank and presidential library whose goals are to promote freedom, democracy, market economies, responsibility and gender equity.

RON KRUSZEWSKI, STIFEL NICOLAUS Stifel Nicolaus is one of a handful of investment banks that continue posting profits in the ongoing economic crisis. The company has posted seven consecutive years of revenue and earnings-per-share growth; no small feat in the current economy. Chairman and CEO Ronald Kruszewski attributes that success to knowing the value of the corporations assets and avoiding the overwhelming leveraging that has brought down much larger financial giants this year. THE FINANCIAL MARKET CRISIS: A PANEL DISCUSSION A panel of Darden faculty offers context and explanations for the ongoing turmoil affecting the financial markets. During their discussion it seems obvious that the complex, cause-and-effect interplay of terrorist activity, Federal Reserve policy, relaxed regulation and creative mortgage financing in the last nine years created a climate of poor business leadership and loose ethics that fed a consuming desire for wealth. The dialog also focuses on the implications of the financial crisis of 2008, especially on how it may impact the career prospects of MBA students and graduates. THOMAS J. BALTIMORE, RLJ DEVELOPMENT Capacity crowds turned out to learn about Emerging Domestic Markets during the 2008 Darden Black Business Student Forum Conference on April 4. Emerging Domestic Markets (EDMs) collectively have an estimated purchasing power of $1.3 trillion annually. These markets represent an intriguing opportunity for business leaders. But there is more at stake. EDMs are the very markets that stand to benefit the most from committed business leadership. Students during the conference learned that these markets represent both economic opportunity and the chance to make a difference in the world of practical affairs, which is the essence of the Darden School mission. DARDEN'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONVOCATION Hundreds of alumni, students, faculty and friends of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business gathered on grounds Sept. 23 for the opening of Anniversary Weekend. The day marked the opening celebration of Darden’s golden anniversary, which will continue to be observed with special events in at least 50 cities around the world during the next two years.
